A beautiful Koru sculpture wonderfully hand crafted from an exquisite piece of green grey Inanga Pounamu with a wonderful natural pattern on the back and displayed on a fantastic Kawakawa Pounamu base. This will be a taonga to treasure.

Pounamu sourced from the Arahura river by Kaitiaki Peter Tauwhare https://www.mokopounamu.co.nz/pounamu-carvers/pete...

Koru- The Maori word for bright or loop. It refers to the shoots of the silver fern. The circular movement to the inner core refers to "going back to the beginnings". The unfurling frond itself is symbolic for new life, new beginnings, hope, personal growth, purity nurturing, a new phase in life, the spirit of rejuvenation and peace.

Sculpture - Inanga- Pounamu takes its name from a freshwater fish native to New Zealand. It is pale and often transparent, like the young of the Inanga fish. It is pearly white to grey green in colour, and ranges from translucent to quite opaque. It can change colour over time, developing a light olive tint as it ages and oxidises - Highly prized by the Māori and the desired material for making Mere and Patu.

Base - Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. It comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used for jewellery purposes.
