Tim Steel

Tim Steel is an internationally award-winning artist, known for his contemporary-traditional style of carving. Raised in the coastal town of Pukerua Bay, Tim is of both Pākehā and Ngāi Tahu/Kāi Tāmoe descent. From his studio in Waipawa, Tim creates small sculptures and jewellery, working predominantly with Pounamu and Onewa.

Tim’s work is deeply inspired by the rich history of taonga (treasures) and Māori artifacts, as well as the natural and urban aesthetics of Aotearoa. His carvings are not only beautiful, but also rich in cultural significance, combining traditional techniques with a modern artistic twist. Each piece is a testament to Tim's craftsmanship and connection to his heritage.
