Peter Mitchell – Traditional Māori Bone Carver with Over 30 Years of Craftsmanship
Hello I'm -
Peter is New Zealand born, of European–Māori–Pitcairn Island descent.
Bone carving is a traditional Māori craft, and it is on this culture that most of Peter’s designs are based. Fishing plays an important role in Māori culture, and this is reflected in his carvings - depicting dolphins, whale tails, and fishhooks. The curling frond of the fern (koru), abundant throughout New Zealand, forms a key element in many of his designs.
Peter was educated in Wellington, where his love of technical drawing greatly influenced his early artistic development. A builder by trade, he has channelled his creative talent into producing high-quality bovine and whalebone pendants.
His work has been featured in galleries and museums across New Zealand for over 30 years.
