Carver: Westland Greenstone

This Hapopo Toki is an exceptional example of the stone's dramatic range, a vivid, bright grass green swept through with bold inclusions that move across the face like storm clouds rolling over a valley. The contrast is striking and entirely natural, and no two pieces of Hapopo will ever carry the same patterning. Flashes of gold and ochre surface through the green, adding further depth to an already captivating stone.

This is a large, commanding Toki that wears with genuine authority, its generous proportions giving the stone full room to display its remarkable colour story. The upper section is dressed with a bold crosshatch chevron cord binding in black waxed cord, its geometric counterpoint to the organic patterning of the stone below. Together, the binding and the stone create a piece that is as visually powerful as it is culturally significant.

Toki/Adze – The Toki had much meaning for the Māori, fashioned from stone or greenstone it was an essential tool for survival and day to day life for the Māori. That is the reason Māori attribute the spiritual meaning of strength and power to the Toki. This symbol represents Mana, determination, control, strength, focus and honour.

Hapopo- Genuine West Coast Greenstone. It's colour ranges from medium green to a dark forest green with a unique mottled texture. The name originating from Kā Umu o Hapopo (Big Bay) which is in Poutini ki te toka (South Westland).

Totoweka- This stone is usually like the mid green Kawakawa variety but differs in that the spotting or streaks are red like blood. It is rare to find Totoweka in the Westland jade fields, but when a piece is discovered, it is highly cherished and sometimes becomes the show piece of the fossicker’s collection. Large deposits of Totoweka occur in the South Westland area. The name comes from toto (blood), weka (Native bush hen) or weka blood. The red iron oxide inclusions were likened to the colour of blood of the Weka.
