Moko Pounamu Te Whai Rahi (Manta Ray) Genuine NZ Kawakawa Greenstone - Motuoapa
A contemporary Manta Ray design, this beautiful piece is hand carved by Dave Curtis from dark green Kawakawa Pounamu. The sweeping curves taper into crisp, refined points, giving the design a sense of motion and grace. Finished with a smooth, luminous polish that brings out the depth of the stone, this pendant is a striking work of craftsmanship that will be treasured for years to come.
Te Whai Rahi - Manta Ray is respected as a powerful protector of the deep. Its unusual shape and the way it seems to glide out of the blackness gives it a very spiritual power, which it is in some areas believed to allow it to move between the mortal and spiritual realms at will. In certain areas of Aotearoa New Zealand, the Whai is believed to be Kaitiaki – Protector. They are often seen gliding effortlessly through the water at the beach, yet when they are startled or threatened their response can be quick, powerful. It represents freedom, beauty and elegance, and is a strong symbol of protection.
Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. it comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used in gem purposes.
Moko Pounamu- for over 40 years Moko Pounamu has both supported and contributed to the life and breath of Pounamu Carving in Aotearoa New Zealand. The extraordinary and varied qualities of this stone, also known as Greenstone (and more technically Nephrite Jade), is displayed across our range of carvings and jewellery. We are proud to support the work of many talented craftspeople local to our beautiful country, and we love sharing this range with you.
