Carver: Andy Ruskin

This contemporary sword form pendant is carved from Kawakawa pounamu, showing a rich, even green with soft cloudy patches and darker mottling running along the blade. The piece takes on a long, elegant silhouette with a rounded handle at the top and a slender, tapering blade curving down to a fine point, echoing the traditional form of a Māori patu or blade. At the centre, a carved wheku style face with a detailed eye and ridged brow marks the transition between handle and blade, adding a strong figurative element to the piece. A drilled hole at the top is threaded with a black cord and finished with a simple woven knot. The surface is polished to a smooth, glossy lustre throughout, with the carved facial detailing left crisp and well defined against the flowing lines of the blade.

Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. it comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used in gem purposes.
