Kōauau is a traditional Māori cross-blown flute, more commonly made from wood, bone, or kelp, and used for entertainment, healing, and grieving. The instrument ranges in length and typically has three finger holes called wenewene. The music of the Kōauau often includes words, and skilled players can convey these through the instrument by manipulating their tongue and lips.
Traditionally carved from Whale bone, however these days many bone carvings are made from cattle bone as it is an ethically abundant source.
