An incredible Porohita handcrafted from a beautiful piece of Auhunga Flower Pounamu, mounted onto a gorgeous piece of Basalt stone. A stunning disc that if positioned just the right way then you could imagine a scene where you are looking down upon hills and valleys in the summer.
Porohita/The Disc - Represents the circle of life which has no beginning or end. It means you have a choice to do and achieve whatever you want to in life. Its curved lines also represent the idea of energy and movement and like the cyclical nature of time and seasons, where one path ends, another begins. The Disc is also believed to have protective qualities and can symbolize a shield or a boundary that keeps negative influences and harm at bay.
Sculpture - Auhunga- Genuine West Coast Greenstone from the Arahura River area, West Coast. Auhunga Pounamu is a pale opaque green colour. Resembling the Southern New Zealand mountains, its --name translates to frosty, given as the intermediate of Inanga and Kawakawa.
Putiputi (Flower) Jade- is New Zealand’s most prized Greenstone, with pale green or ochre clouds of colour. This distinctive patterning and colouring come from the outside rim or 'rind' of the greenstone boulders or stones where the surface has oxidised.
Base - Ōnewa-Basalt
also called karā or pakawera, born from the fiery heart of volcanic activity, embodies the raw power and creative force of nature. Formed from molten lava that cools and solidifies, this dark and dense stone is found throughout New Zealand, a testament to the land’s volcanic origins. Basalt’s fine-grained texture and rich black or grey hues make it a striking material for carving, its strength and durability echoing the resilience of the land itself. Traditionally shaped with patience and expertise, basalt was used to craft tools, weapons, and ceremonial objects, connecting its users to the elemental power of fire and earth. Holding a piece of basalt is to hold a fragment of Aotearoa’s fiery past, a reminder of the transformative energy that continues to shape this land.
