Moko Pounamu Nguru Flute Whale Tooth Rei Puta Genuine Whale Bone - Ngahere
This whale tooth Nguru flute follows the tooth’s natural curve, tapering gently towards a rounded opening at the tip. A carved Manaia flows along its surface, accompanied by tightly curled spirals and finely cut grooves. Warm ivory tones contrast with golden-brown colouring in the recessed details, giving the design depth and definition.
Smooth areas around the finger holes provide a beautiful contrast to the intricate carving along the sides. The curved silhouette and flowing patterns invite closer inspection, revealing the care taken with each detail. Combining the form of a flute with sculptural decoration, this Nguru makes a distinctive addition to a collection of carved instruments or treasured artworks.
Whale Bone has always been a special medium for Māori artists, Whales are considered a taonga species, and represent abundance, richness and were regarded as chiefly animals. Some tribes see whales as the descendants of Tangaroa, the god of the ocean and strandings are seen as gifts from Tangaroa and carving them is a way of honouring that gift. Whales possess a tapu (sacred) significance to Māori as both supernatural beings and as harbingers of personal change and spiritual growth.
