A gorgeous carving of a Long-Eared Owl, not a native to New Zealand but a wonderful Sculpture, hand carved from a gorgeous piece of Kawakawa Pounamu . His eyes seem to watch you, ready to alert you of anything that is amiss, a protector. The detail in this carving is amazing and a credit to the wonderful talent of the carver. This beautiful owl comes from the the estate of Alfred Moreton.
Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. it comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used in gem purposes.
