Moko Pounamu NZ Genuine Peka Peka Inanga Greenstone - Riroriro
This contemporary pendant features two opposing, beak like profiles joined by a broad, rounded central body. Sweeping openwork curves and inward-turning tips give the design a sense of movement, while a prominent circular eye, edged with iridescent paua, creates a striking focal point. Soft sage, blue-grey and creamy green tones mingle with darker olive patches and fine black speckles throughout the stone.
Raised contours and smoothly rounded edges give the carving depth, with each opening carefully shaped to complement the surrounding curves. A small teardrop opening sits beneath the central suspension point, while the reverse reveals further natural mottling and Johnston’s red maker’s mark. Finished with an earthy braided cord and dark binding, this expressive piece makes a distinctive statement from either side.
Peka Peka
is a very old Maori Design representing a Native NZ bat, it is often classed as a Manaia, which are traditionally believed to be the messenger between the earthly world of mortals and the domain of the spirits, and its symbol is used as a guardian against evil.
Inanga- Pounamu takes its name from a freshwater fish native to New Zealand. It is pale and often transparent, like the young of the Inanga fish. It is pearly white to grey green in colour, and ranges from translucent to quite opaque. It can change colour over time, developing a light olive tint as it ages and oxidises - Highly prized by the Māori and the desired material for making Mere and Patu.
