Muka
is the strong, white fibre extracted from the New Zealand flax plant (harakeke) by scraping and pounding the green flesh off the leaves. It is a fundamental material in traditional Māori weaving, used to create cloaks, nets, ropes, and other textiles, and is also processed into a handmade paper.
Crafted by a Māori arts collective founded by Alice and Jacinta in Ōtautahi, dedicated to preserving and celebrating traditional craftsmanship and supporting Māori Wahine.
Size 92mm long x 35mm wide
Care Instructions for Muka Earrings
Avoid Direct Sunlight: Store your earrings in a cool, dry place to prevent fading or weakening of the fibres.
Brush and Re-Shape Gently: Use your fingertips and a fine comb to straighten and reshape any frayed fibres.
Keep Them Dry: If your earrings get wet, gently dry them and reshape the fibres.
Trim to Fit: If they’re too long, use sharp scissors to carefully trim to your desired length.
Protect from Oils and Chemicals: Apply perfumes or sprays before wearing to protect the fibres from damage.
Store Safely: Lay flat or hang securely to maintain their shape and prevent tangling.
