Moko Pounamu Mere Sculpture NZ Genuine Hapopo Pounamu - Maungakaramea
A fabulous Mere handcrafted from an outstanding piece of Hapopo Pounamu. The incredible colours and patterns in this epic Mere are fantastic, and the skill of the carver really shines through, enhanced with a hand plaited black waxed taura with native Weka feathers, this will be a treasured taonga for many generations.
Mere or Patu is a type of short, broad-bladed weapon in the shape of an enlarged tear drop. It was used to strike/jab an opponent in the body or the head. The Mere signifies high status and gives the owner courage and strength. It is the same design as a Patu, but the difference is a Patu is made of wood, stone, or whale bone whereas Meres are made of Greenstone Pounamu.
Hapopo- Genuine West Coast Greenstone. It's colour ranges from medium green to a dark forest green with a unique mottled texture. The name originating from Kā Umu o Hapopo (Big Bay) which is in Poutini ki te toka (South Westland).
