Moko Pounamu Mere NZ Genuine Kawakawa Greenstone - Karaka
Carved by Paul Anderson, this Kawakawa pounamu Mere showcases deep forest green tones interwoven with lighter green and grey mottling. Its broad, rounded blade tapers smoothly into a narrow handle, creating a strong, balanced silhouette. The polished surface highlights the stone’s intricate natural pattern, offering detail to appreciate across the full length of the piece.
Carved grooves define the rounded end of the handle, while a braided cord threaded through it adds a complementary finishing touch. Presented on a warm toned wooden stand, the Mere makes an impressive display piece, with the simple outline allowing the richly patterned Kawakawa to take centre stage. A distinctive addition to a pounamu collection, it brings together careful shaping and the individual character of the stone.
Mere or Patu is a type of short, broad-bladed weapon in the shape of an enlarged tear drop. It was used to strike/jab an opponent in the body or the head. The Mere signifies high status and gives the owner courage and strength. It is the same design as a Patu, but the difference is Patu’s are made of wood, stone, or whale bone whereas Mere’s are made of Greenstone Pounamu.
Kawakawa - is the most common variety of Pounamu. It comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used for gem purposes.
Rimu is a dense native timber of NZ. It is deep reddish brown in colour and is strong and durable. A stunning timber - one of the most beautiful in the world with a fine textured grain.
