Moko Pounamu Megalodon Fossilised Mako Mau (Shark Tooth) & Genuine NZ Kawakawa Greenstone - Te Henga
An extraordinary juvenile Megalodon Fossilised shark tooth, bound with a natural handmade Muka plaited half hitch, adjusted by a large round hand carved Kawakawa Pounamu bead. This will be an incredibly unique taonga.
Megalodon Fossil shark tooth found on the Chatham Islands. These specimens—dating back roughly 30 to 55 million years to the Eocene and Miocene epochs—include ancient mako and giant prehistoric shark. Teeth have been found as large as 18cm tall, and it’s estimated megalodon could grow to a length of 18 metres. In comparison, the maximum body length recorded for the living great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is 6.1 metres. Small/juvenile teeth (under 3 inches): are more common but still rare, as megalodons and sharks shed thousands of teeth throughout their lives.
Bead - Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. It comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used for jewellery purposes.
Muka
is the strong, white fibre extracted from the New Zealand flax plant (harakeke) by scraping and pounding the green flesh off the leaves. It is a fundamental material in traditional Māori weaving, used to create cloaks, nets, ropes, and other textiles, and is also processed into a handmade paper.
