A stunning piece of water worn Inanga Pounamu displayed on a Rimu base. A wonderful Taonga Mauri stone.

Mauri Stone is a significant Māori concept and physical object representing the life force (mauri) or spiritual essence of a person, place, or thing, often a carved piece of pounamu (greenstone) that acts as a spiritual anchor, protector, or connection to home and community, fostering well-being, strength, and belonging. These tangible symbols are used in important ceremonies, to connect people far from home (like emergency responders), and to honor cultural values, ensuring the vitality and essence of a space or group is maintained.

Inanga- Pounamu takes its name from a freshwater fish native to New Zealand. It is pale and often transparent, like the young of the Inanga fish. It is pearly white to grey green in colour, and ranges from translucent to quite opaque. It can change colour over time, developing a light olive tint as it ages and oxidises - Highly prized by the Māori and the desired material for making Mere and Patu.

Rimu is a dense native timber of NZ. It is deep reddish brown in colour and is strong and durable. A stunning timber - one of the most beautiful in the world with a fine textured grain.
