A stunning Kouma (Breastplate) from a magnificent piece of Raukaraka Pounamu. A wonderful Kouma bound to a beautiful rich piece of Rimu wood, which truly enhances this wonderful carving.
Kouma - Breastplate- signifies strength and protection in battle. Today they still hold this symbolism but more as a representative scale.
Raukaraka- Genuine West Coast Greenstone from the Taramakau River Area. This is the term used by the Māori of the Cook Strait region of the Kawakawa variety that is streaked with a shade of olive green and has yellow and orange hues that blend into the greens. This stone shares its name with the New Zealand native Karaka tree.
Rimu
is a dense native timber of NZ. It is deep reddish brown in colour and is strong and durable. A stunning timber - one of the most beautiful in the world with a fine textured grain.
