A beautifully featured piece of Kawakawa Flower Pounamu was used to craft this Kouma (Breastplate) with marvelous streaks of lighter stone across the face of the piece against the deeper green stone - a wonderful taonga.
Kouma - Breastplate- sits close to the heart, symbolising protection, inner strength, and resilience. Traditionally, it represents the sternum or breastbone, a core structure of the body that provides support and endurance. This taonga serves as a reminder of the wearer’s strength—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Wearing a Kouma connects a person to their ancestors, carrying forward their mana and wisdom. It is a symbol of courage and the ability to face life’s challenges with determination. The coolness of the stone against the skin reinforces a deep connection to Papatūānuku, grounding the wearer in their journey.
Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. it comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used in gem purposes.

e - is New Zealand’s most prized Greenstone, with pale green or ochre clouds of colour. This distinctive patterning and colouring come from the outside rim or 'rind' of the greenstone boulders or stones where the surface has oxidised.
