Moko Pounamu Kouma (Breastplate) NZ Genuine Hapopo Greenstone - Tauhou

This contemporary breast plate is carved from Hapopo pounamu, showing a distinctive mottled olive green stone flecked throughout with darker, almost black inclusions and softer paler patches that give the surface a rich, earthy, textured appearance. The form is a broad, gently curved half moon shape with a flat top edge and a smoothly rounded lower curve, finished with a row of small drilled holes along the straight edge. A natural tan-coloured cord is threaded through each hole and finished in a neat fringe like whip stitch across the top, creating a decorative border before extending into a long braided cord for wearing. The stone is polished to a soft, satin lustre that highlights the natural mottling and depth of the Hapopo variety, giving the piece a bold, statement presence when worn.

Kouma - Breastplate- sits close to the heart, symbolising protection, inner strength, and resilience. Traditionally, it represents the sternum or breastbone, a core structure of the body that provides support and endurance. This taonga serves as a reminder of the wearer’s strength—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Wearing a Kouma connects a person to their ancestors, carrying forward their mana and wisdom. It is a symbol of courage and the ability to face life’s challenges with determination. The coolness of the stone against the skin reinforces a deep connection to Papatūānuku, grounding the wearer in their journey.

Hapopo- Genuine West Coast Greenstone. It's colour ranges from medium green to a dark forest green with a unique mottled texture. The name originating from Kā Umu o Hapopo (Big Bay) which is in Poutini ki te toka (South Westland).
