Moko Pounamu Koruru NZ Genuine Kahurangi Greenstone - Wairoto
This modern stylised Koruru hand carved from a fabulous piece of Kahurangi Pounamu, with red wax eyes, a wonderful taonga for someone who is connected to their whakapapa.
Carved from Kahurangi pounamu, this piece carries both visual strength and cultural meaning. The compact form and smooth flowing lines create a balanced design that sits comfortably when worn, while the expressive features make it a true statement carving.
This piece is ideal for those seeking a meaningful taonga that represents heritage, guardianship, and personal strength.
Koruru are architectural features on large whare tupuna or wharenui (meeting houses) that join the two-front facing maihi (barge boards) at the top apex. A koruru's face is also the face of the represented tupuna (ancestor) embodied in the carved constructed form of the whare tupuna. Many whare whakairo are named after ancestors. The building is regarded as an outstretched body. The koruru (gable head) is the face of the ancestor, the maihi (bargeboards) the arms, the kūwaha (door) the mouth, the tāhuhu (ridgepole) the spine, and the heke (rafters) the ribs.
Kahurangi- Genuine West Coast Greenstone from the Marsden, West Coast area. Kahurangi is the rarest variety of pounamu. It is highly translucent and often comes in vivid shades of green. Small, feather-like markings in the stone can give a cloud effect – although to be classed as Kahurangi, this effect must not reduce the stone’s clarity. The word Kahurangi also indicates nobility and refers to precious jewels and held in high esteem by Māori.
