This contemporary lashed koru is carved from Raukaraka pounamu, showing a soft, sage-green base heavily flecked with warm rust-orange markings and small dark inclusions scattered across the surface, giving the stone a distinctive, earthy, speckled character. The form is a large, rounded disc carved as a single continuous koru, the spiral curling inward smoothly to a tight centre point, with the outer edge left slightly raised to frame the design. At the top, the stone is bound directly to a natural tan cord through a wide, closely woven lashing that arcs across the piece, replacing a drilled hole with a decorative binding technique traditional to pounamu adornment. The surface is finished with a smooth, satin polish that softens the natural mottling, giving the whole pendant a warm, tactile, earthy glow.
Koru- The Maori word for bright or loop. It refers to the shoots of the silver fern. The circular movement to the inner core refers to "going back to the beginnings". The unfurling frond itself is symbolic for new life, new beginnings, hope, personal growth, purity nurturing, a new phase in life, the spirit of rejuvenation and peace.
Raukaraka- Genuine West Coast Greenstone from the Taramakau River Area. This is the term used by the Māori of the Cook Strait region of the Kawakawa variety that is streaked with a shade of olive green and has yellow and orange hues that blend into the greens. This stone shares its name with the New Zealand native Karaka tree.
