Carver: Marshall Johnston

Carved by Marshall Johnston, this Kawakawa pounamu leaf features a broad, heart shaped outline with softly rounded lobes and a gently pointed tip. Finely carved veins radiate from the suspension point, branching across the face to mirror a natural leaf. Soft blue green and sage tones mingle with deeper forest green patches and pale, cloudy markings, giving the surface depth and individual character.

The leaf’s edges curl and undulate, creating a beautifully sculpted profile that suggests a leaf caught in a gentle breeze. Its smooth reverse showcases the stone’s natural pattern and bears the carver’s distinctive red maker’s mark. Finished with a braided cord in complementary earthy tones, this pendant combines delicate botanical detail with the enduring beauty of pounamu.

Inanga- Pounamu takes its name from a freshwater fish native to New Zealand. It is pale and often transparent, like the young of the Inanga fish. It is pearly white to grey green in colour, and ranges from translucent to quite opaque. It can change colour over time, developing a light olive tint as it ages and oxidises - Highly prized by the Māori and the desired material for making Mere and Patu.
