Carver: Marshall Johnston

This Kawakawa pounamu leaf features a heart-shaped outline with rounded upper lobes and a softly pointed tip. Delicate carved veins fan out across the face, following the leaf’s gently curved surface. Pale blue green and milky sage tones flow through the stone, contrasted by darker green bands, fine speckles and wisps of lighter colour.

Softly rippling edges give the leaf a lifelike sense of movement, with its sculpted curves particularly striking when viewed from the side. The smooth reverse reveals the stone’s layered natural markings and the carver’s red maker’s mark. Suspended from an earthy-toned braided cord, this distinctive pendant brings together botanical detail and the subtle beauty of Inanga pounamu.

Inanga- Pounamu takes its name from a freshwater fish native to New Zealand. It is pale and often transparent, like the young of the Inanga fish. It is pearly white to grey green in colour, and ranges from translucent to quite opaque. It can change colour over time, developing a light olive tint as it ages and oxidises - Highly prized by the Māori and the desired material for making Mere and Patu.
