Carver: Owen Mapp

Carved by Owen Mapp, Hine Nui te Po stands upright on a richly coloured wooden base, her elongated whale tooth form creating a commanding presence. Paired curves and raised, rib-like patterns flow down the body, balanced by delicate spirals and finely carved facial details. Dark horn eyes contrast with the creamy ivory surface, giving the figure an intense, watchful expression.

The warm, irregular contours of the wood provide a striking foundation for the pale carving above. Depicting the Great Woman of the Night, this sculptural interpretation brings together expressive form and intricate detail, inviting reflection on the stories surrounding her. A distinctive centrepiece, it offers collectors an evocative example of Owen Mapp’s carving and storytelling.

Whale Bone has always been a special medium for Māori artists, Whales are considered a taonga species, and represent abundance, richness and were regarded as chiefly animals. Some tribes see whales as the descendants of Tangaroa, the god of the ocean and strandings are seen as gifts from Tangaroa and carving them is a way of honouring that gift. Whales possess a tapu (sacred) significance to Māori as both supernatural beings and as harbingers of personal change and spiritual growth.
