Moko Pounamu Hei Tiki Genuine NZ Kawakawa Greenstone - Maungatua
This outstanding Hei Tiki is hand carved by Des Hetherington from Kawakawa Pounamu found near the town of Rimu - a striking material known for its warm earthy tones and fine natural grain. The carving shows beautifully balanced proportions, flowing contours, and refined detailing that reflect this carver's masterful style. Inlaid Paua eyes add brightness and life to the face, enhanced by traditional red wax for subtle contrast and depth. Finished with a smooth polish, this is a premium and expressive taonga crafted with exceptional skill.
Hei Tiki- According to legend was the first man on Earth who originated from the stars. The first mortal person who created the first woman after his image. The exact meaning of the Tiki is disputed. There are several opinions but the most accepted are that the Tiki stands for fertility. Traditionally regarded as a good luck charm meant to keep evil spirits away.
Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. it comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used in gem purposes.
Paua Shell
– Abalone, our Paua shell is rich and deep in iridescent colours unique to New Zealand. Found all around the rocky shoreline coast but grows best in southern waters. Paua shell has been traditionally used by Maori to illuminate the eyes & features of carvings and artwork. While Paua sits within the abalone family, which is found in other parts of the world, namely, South America, Australia, Western North America, and Japan, our Paua's hidden, bright multi-coloured interior shell is only found in New Zealand.
