This contemporary hei matau is carved from Kawakawa pounamu, showing a rich, even green with soft cloudy internal patterning and lighter, paler streaks running through the curve of the stone. The form is carved as a single bold, sweeping spiral, thick and rounded through the body and tapering smoothly into a tight inner curl, giving the piece a strong, sculptural presence. At the top, the stone is finished with a small raised point bound by a neatly woven black cord in a crossed lashing pattern, connecting to a black braided cord for wearing. The whole piece is polished to a deep, glossy lustre, with the curves finished smooth and tactile, allowing the natural movement within the stone to show through as it catches the light.
Hei Matau(Fishhook) - Originally Maori have been fishermen. Their main food source was the sea, so a fishhook of high quality was a very valuable item to own. The hook became a symbol of prosperity, abundance, good health, power, authority and respect for the sea and its life in it. They also provide good luck and safety while travelling across water.
Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. it comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used in gem purposes.
