Moko Pounamu Knife Genuine NZ Totoweka Greenstone & Petrified Wood - Kaimaumau
This Hand Forged knife has a beautiful Totoweka Pounamu & Petrified Wood handle, fixed with brass rivets to full-tang blade and carried in a handcrafted leather sheath with a belt loop. The gorgeous colour of the Petrified Wood, joined perfectly to the stunning South Westland Totoweka Greenstone on the handle, is a wonderful combination of colour and tone in a knife that is sharp and ready to use.
Totoweka- This stone is usually like the mid green Kawakawa variety but differs in that the spotting or streaks are red like blood. It is rare to find Totoweka in the Westland jade fields, but when a piece is discovered, it is highly cherished and sometimes becomes the show piece of the fossicker’s collection. Large deposits of Totoweka occur in the South Westland area. The name comes from toto (blood), weka (Native bush hen) or weka blood. The red iron oxide inclusions were likened to the colour of blood of the Weka.
Petrified Wood
—formed when ancient trees were buried by volcanic ash and permineralized with silica and iron—features rich graining, rings, and colours ranging from white to deep black, orange, and jasper. You can discover it locally in riverbeds
