Moko Pounamu Hei Matau (Hook) Genuine NZ Kawakawa Greenstone - Kereru
This Hei Matau pendant, hand-carved from Kawakawa Pounamu, reveals the rich and slightly speckled tones which make this Greenstone type so distinctive. The carving shows a classical hook design with a smooth polish enhancing the carving's shape and the Greenstone - a wonderful taonga.
Hei Matau/Fishhook - Originally Māori were fishermen. Their main food source was the sea, so a fishhook of high quality was an unbelievably valuable item to own. The hook became a symbol of prosperity, abundance, good health, power, authority and respect for the sea and its life in it. They also provide good luck and safety while traveling across water.
Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. It comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used for gem purposes.
