This Hei Matau pendant is hand carved from Kawakawa Pounamu, showing deep green tones with subtle natural features within the stone. The form is neatly shaped and well balanced, giving the piece a gentle sense of flow associated with the traditional fish hook design. Finished to a smooth polish, it carries warm character.

Hei Matau(Fishhook) - Originally Maori have been fishermen. Their main food source was the sea, so a fishhook of high quality was a very valuable item to own. The hook became a symbol of prosperity, abundance, good health, power, authority and respect for the sea and its life in it. They also provide good luck and safety while travelling across water.

Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. it comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used in gem purposes.
