Carver: Moko Workshops

This gorgeous pendant is carved from Kahurangi Pounamu and encloses a stunning iridescent Blue Paua Pearl. The shape of the carving has been styled to represent a beautiful leaf which holds the teardrop_shaped pearl perfectly - a wonderful taonga.

Paua Pearl- these pearls are cultivated in New Zealand, usually with carefully selected wild-caught Paua (New Zealand Abalone) into which a disc is implanted over which layers of nacre are laid down over 2 to 3 years. Only a small number of the resultant pearls are gem-grade, and the process is very labour intensive, making each Paua Pearl used for jewellery very special indeed.

Kahurangi- Genuine West Coast Greenstone from the Marsden, West Coast area. Kahurangi is the rarest variety of pounamu. It is highly translucent and often comes in vivid shades of green. Small, feather-like markings in the stone can give a cloud effect – although to be classed as Kahurangi, this effect must not reduce the stone’s clarity. The word Kahurangi also indicates nobility and refers to precious jewels and held in high esteem by Māori.
