Moko Pounamu Feather NZ Genuine Totoweka Greenstone - Kanuka
This beautifully carved Feather pendant is crafted from NZ genuine Totoweka pounamu, known for its distinctive mix of soft green tones and rich, earthy inclusions. The stone features natural mottled patterns with darker streaks that create depth and character, making each piece completely unique.
The detailed feather carving, visible along the back, adds texture and movement, enhancing the natural form and giving the pendant a refined, handcrafted feel. The slender, elongated shape sits elegantly when worn, making it a timeless and meaningful piece.
Totoweka- This stone is usually like the mid green Kawakawa variety but differs in that the spotting or streaks are red like blood. It is rare to find Totoweka in the Westland jade fields, but when a piece is discovered, it is highly cherished and sometimes becomes the show piece of the fossicker’s collection. Large deposits of Totoweka occur in the South Westland area. The name comes from toto (blood), weka (Native bush hen) or weka blood. The red iron oxide inclusions were likened to the colour of blood of the Weka
Huru
– Feathers are highly significant, symbolizing status, connection to ancestors, and the spiritual world, used in prestigious items like the kahu huruhuru (feather cloak) for chiefs, with specific birds like the huia (now extinct) and kiwi holding immense cultural value, representing mana, leadership, and lineage, woven into cloaks for important occasions and ceremonies.
