Moko Pounamu "Feather Bundle" Whale Tooth Rei Puta Genuine Whale Bone - Waitoa
Feather Bundle is a beautifully detailed whale tooth carving, shaped into an overlapping arrangement of feathers. Fine grooves fan out from smooth, raised quills, following the gently curved form and creating a sense of softness and movement. Creamy ivory tones blend with warm honey colouring, highlighting the layered design and delicate carving.
Created as a tribute to our endangered birds, this piece carries a quiet message of remembrance and care for our natural world. The feathers wrap around the tooth, inviting closer inspection from every angle. Its graceful form and thoughtful meaning make Feather Bundle a special addition to a carving collection or a meaningful gift for someone who treasures our birdlife.
Whale Bone has always been a special medium for Māori artists, Whales are considered a taonga species, and represent abundance, richness and were regarded as chiefly animals. Some tribes see whales as the descendants of Tangaroa, the god of the ocean and strandings are seen as gifts from Tangaroa and carving them is a way of honouring that gift. Whales possess a tapu (sacred) significance to Māori as both supernatural beings and as harbingers of personal change and spiritual growth.
