Moko Pounamu Contemporary Toki NZ Genuine Kawakawa Greenstone - Aotea
This contemporary Toki is carved from Kawakawa pounamu, displaying a deep, rich green with soft, cloudy internal patterning that shifts subtly across the stone's surface. The form takes on a classic adze silhouette with a broad, gently tapering blade that narrows toward the base, finished with two fine incised lines running vertically down the lower face to echo traditional Toki detailing. At the top, the stone flares into two curved, wing like points flanking a smoothly drilled hole, through which a black braided cord is threaded and finished with a neat woven knot. The surface is polished to a soft, glowing lustre, allowing the natural depth and movement within the stone to show through, while the edges retain a slightly rounded, tactile finish characteristic of hand finished pounamu.
Toki/Adze – The Toki had much meaning for the Māori, fashioned from stone or greenstone it was an essential tool for survival and day to day life for the Māori. That is the reason Māori attribute the spiritual meaning of strength and power to the Toki. This symbol represents Mana, determination, control, strength, focus and honour.
Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. It comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used for jewellery purposes.
