Moko Pounamu Wakahuia/Patu Box Set (Treasure box) Rimu -Titoki

This handcrafted native Rimu New Zealand timber set pairs a carved wooden Patu with a matching display stand and fitted Wakahuia (treasure box) . Finished in Rimu both the Patu and box lid feature detailed, etched kōwhaiwhai inspired carving that accentuates the natural warm grain.

The Wakahuia/Patu Box Set (Treasure Box) is lined with red felt, including the bottom of the box and was made on the Arahura Pa by Sam Ngaama.

Matching Patu with tau cord , display cradle , and the beautiful coordinating carved treasure box.

The Patu: Traditionally a symbol of strength, honor, and chieftainship, this piece is carved with flowing Māori motifs across the blade and features a traditional grooved reke (butt) fitted with a woven black wrist cord (tātua/tau) . It rests elevated on custom presentation uprights for display .

Wakahuia/Patu Box is a traditional Māori carved wooden container, used to store precious items like huia bird feathers, pendants, and personal ornaments. The boxes themselves were treated as taonga (treasures), often named and passed down through generations. Because the heads of high-ranking chiefs were tapu (sacred), items touching their hair were also sacred and dangerous to others, requiring safe storage.

Rimu is a dense native timber of NZ. It is deep reddish brown in colour and is strong and durable. A stunning timber - one of the most beautiful in the world with a fine textured grain.
