Carver: Dean Hetherington

This beautifully crafted Taniwha was carved by Dean Hetherington to represent a protector and guardian spirit. It displays the characteristic dark, deep green of the high grade of Kawakawa used and great skill has been applied to the differing finishes on the piece, with satin in the body of the piece changing to more polished greenstone on the tail.

Taniwha- in Te ao Maori, the Taniwha can have many meanings from protector to monster, depending on the area and tradition being discussed. Usually they are beings which live in rivers, caves or the sea - and particularly in places where there are dangerous currents or waves. Often they are esteemed as Kaitiaki, or protective guardians of places and of people, and treated with great respect.

Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. it comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used in gem purposes.
