Moko Pounamu Hei Matau (Hook) Genuine NZ Kawakawa Greenstone - Mamaranui
This captivating Hei Matau, handcrafted from Kawakawa Pounamu, is carved so skillfully that it looks as though the stone might have been soft when the carver began his work. The shape flows like a ribbon from the cord to the point, catching the light differently at each point, and is finished with a satin-like polish. The Greenstone shifts beautifully in shade across the piece and is lightest at the lowest point. Completed with a Pounamu toggle, this marvelous work will be a cherished taonga.
Hei Matau/Fishhook - Originally Māori have been fishermen. Their main food source was the sea, so a fishhook of high quality was an unbelievably valuable item to own. The hook became a symbol of prosperity, abundance, good health, power, authority and respect for the sea and its life in it. They also provide good luck and safety while traveling across water.
Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. it comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used in gem purposes.
