This Pekapeka is hand carved from Kawakawa Pounamu, showing beautiful milder green tones with natural inclusions and depth throughout the stone. The paired Manaia forms flow together beautifully, creating a sense of harmony and movement in the design. Finished with a fine polish, it’s a striking pendant with presence and balance.
Peka Peka is a very old Māori Design representing a Native NZ bat, it is often classed as a Manaia, which are traditionally believed to be the messenger between the earthly world of mortals and the domain of the spirits, and its symbol is used as a guardian against evil.
Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. it comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used in gem purposes.
