Handcrafted from a fabulous piece of Kawakawa Pounamu and hung on sterling silver, these feather earrings are stunning and would make a beautiful gift for someone special.
Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. it comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used in gem purposes.
Huru
– Feathers are highly significant, symbolizing status, connection to ancestors, and the spiritual world, used in prestigious items like the kahu huruhuru (feather cloak) for chiefs, with specific birds like the huia (now extinct) and kiwi holding immense cultural value, representing mana, leadership, and lineage, woven into cloaks for important occasions and ceremonies.
