This stunning Hei Matau pendant is hand carved from Kawakawa Pounamu, shaped into a striking contemporary design with a sharp tail spiraling down from the lower part of the piece, and flowing lines that give the piece real movement. The deep green stone carries natural variation that enhances the form which has been skillfully shaped and finished to a satin sheen. A striking pendant with refined shaping and strong visual presence.

Hei Matau(Fishhook) - Originally Maori have been fishermen. Their main food source was the sea, so a fishhook of high quality was a very valuable item to own. The hook became a symbol of prosperity, abundance, good health, power, authority and respect for the sea and its life in it. They also provide good luck and safety while travelling across water.

Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. it comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used in gem purposes.
