Moko Pounamu Hei Matau Genuine NZ Kawakawa Greenstone - Motutaiko
This gorgeous larger Hei Matau is hand carved from dark Kawakawa Pounamu, showing deep green tones with beautiful lighter streaks and grain evident in the stone. Its bold form has strong flowing lines, giving it real presence as a statement piece. Finished with a smooth polish, it’s a striking and beautifully crafted pendant with power, balance, and character.
Hei Matau - Fishhook- Originally Māori have been fishermen. Their main food source was the sea, so a fishhook of high quality was an unbelievably valuable item to own. The hook became a symbol of prosperity, abundance, good health, power, authority and respect for the sea and its life in it. They also provide good luck and safety while travelling across water.
Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. It comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used for gem purposes.
