Moko Pounamu Hei Matau Genuine NZ Kawakawa Greenstone - Motunau
This Hei Matau is hand carved from Kawakawa Pounamu, showing deep green tones with natural grain and tonal shifts through the stone. The form is flowing with fluted detailing at the top of the piece, Finished with a fine polish, it’s a pendant with strength and character.
Hei Matau(Fishhook) - Originally Maori have been fishermen. Their main food source was the sea, so a fishhook of high quality was a very valuable item to own. The hook became a symbol of prosperity, abundance, good health, power, authority and respect for the sea and its life in it. They also provide good luck and safety while traveling across water.
Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. it comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used in gem purposes.
