Carver: Peter Bishop

The work of a master carver, this deep-dark-green double Koru is crafted from a sample of the finest Kawakawa greenstone. While the piece appears at first sight to be almost black, it still possesses a green translucency and rewards whoever might hold it up to the light. The velvet matt finish on the inner part of the work changes to a fine polish on the outer edge, while the reverse of the piece is polished to perfection and shows small flecks of of lighter stone that impart even more character to this exquisite carving. The pounamu used to form this Koru rested in Rimu, a small town south of Hokitika, before beginning its journey to the carver.

Koru- The Māori word for bright or loop. It refers to the shoots of the silver fern. The circular movement to the inner core refers to "going back to the beginnings". The unfurling frond itself is symbolic for new life, new beginnings, hope, personal growth, purity nurturing, a new phase in life, the spirit of rejuvenation and peace.

Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. it comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used in gem purposes.
