Waka - The waka taua (carved canoe) is an important symbol of a tribe’s mana (authority). New Zealand’s abundance of wide-girthed trees such as tōtara meant that Māori could build more diverse waka (canoes), each with its own special function, from the grand carved waka taua for war parties, to handy rafts for fishing.
Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. it comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used in gem purposes.
