Moko Pounamu Mere Sculpture NZ Genuine Douglas Creek Greenstone - Hohonu

A wonderful Mere handcrafted from a beautiful piece of Douglas Creek Pounamu and mounted onto a gorgeous piece of water worn Kawakawa Pounamu. The colours in the base are amazing and contrast so well with the Patu. A wonderful sculpture and one to treasure for generations to come.

Mere or Patu is a type of short, broad-bladed weapon in the shape of an enlarged tear drop. It was used to strike/jab an opponent in the body or the head. The Mere signifies high status and gives the owner courage and strength. It is the same design as a Patu, but the difference is a Patu is made of wood, stone, or whale bone whereas Meres are made of Greenstone Pounamu.

Sculpture - Douglas Creek Pounamu(a form of Serpentinite) – Found only on the West Coast of the South Island in the vicinity of its name’s sake, each piece of Serpentinite has inclusions of many minerals that make a stunning piece of Artwork. Two or more Serpentine minerals can form a Serpentinite Rock and many other sub varieties of this stunner. This is regarded as one of the three stones that make up the Pounamu family.

Serpentinite has amazing healing qualities, to replenish and restore energy in the body, it also creates a protective and energetic field around us. Serpentinite can be a porous stone; in some cases, it will absorb the oils from your skin and deepen the colour of your stone.

Base - Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. it comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used in gem purposes.
